Give it a rest!
Running a busy household with three children, my mother often claimed that the only peace she had was found in the smallest room in the house! Let the reader understand! There are so many demands placed upon us, so much to do and so many responsibilities to fulfil that sometimes we can be left spinning. Working too much, too hard, without any rest or time to ourselves can be debilitating and exhausting. In a society where we often have to express our worth in what we do, we can easily forget the need for rest and time to ourselves. ‘You must come away to some lonely place all by yourselves and rest for a while,’ said Jesus to his Apostles. He knew the need for rest, for taking care of ourselves. Those who travel by air are reminded in the Stewards’ safety message that, in the event of an emergency, they should affix their own oxygen masks before helping others! We don’t need an emergency to do this. We are called by Jesus to spend some time to rest, whether or not that’s in the smallest room in the house!
Lord Jesus Christ, you call us to enter your rest. In caring for others, help us to care for ourselves without guilt or fear, for you are Lord for ever and ever. Amen.
