Honest to God!
Have you ever asked a question, received an answer, and been amazed only by the ability of someone to use so many words but actually say nothing or little at all?! Sometimes, words can be so empty. In the gospel reading today, Jesus pulls no punches. His words are blunt, direct, hard hitting. His criticism is of those whose words are empty, devoid of meaning. Quoting Isaiah, he says they are offering worthless words to God, only paying lip service to all his demands. We can all be guilty of this at times. We tick boxes, offer a nodding gesture to God, without committing much if anything at all. And yet God sees deep into our hearts. He knows us better than we know ourselves. With God there can be no hiding or abiding in shadows and shades. So let’s be honest to God!
God our Father, you know us through and through, you know us better than we know ourselves. Help us to worship you with honest and open hearts, and to treat others with respect and true worth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
