Love brings you home

These were my orders: Listen to my voice, then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Follow right to the end the way that I mark out for you, and you will prosper. But they did not listen, they did not pay attention; they followed the dictates of their own evil hearts, refused to face me, and turned their backs on me. From the day your ancestors came out of the land of Egypt until today, day after day I have persistently sent you all my servants the prophets.

JEREMIAH 7:23-28

Charles Mackesy’s book has been a gift to teachers and to so many others, young and old, throughout lockdown. With an array of beautiful illustrations, and inspiring texts which follow the journey of ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse,’ social media has been awash with his drawings as people share his work to uplift and inspire. ‘Sometimes, I feel lost,’ said the Boy. “Me too,” said the Mole, “but we love you, and love brings you home.”

“Follow right to the end the way that I mark out for you, and you will prosper,” says the Lord through the prophet Jeremiah. How many times has life seemed to be going so well, so carefree, so full of love and light and then something happens (or even nothing, sometimes, seems to happen) and we feel a little lost, a little wayward, stuck in the mud, or spinning in circles.

Jesus said, ‘He who endures to the end will have eternal life.” Along the way, we sometimes struggle but we are not expected to be successful, not in the way the world measures anyway. We just need to keep on trying, moving on, listening to God, loving him, knowing that we are loved. “God loved the world that he sent his only Son,” says St John. We may feel lost at times but love, God’s love, brings us home.

God our Father, help us to listen to your voice, to know your presence in our lives, guiding us, loving us, bringing us home. Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
