Dreaming of God’s designs
Ask a class of young schoolchildren what they want to be when they grow up and you get a fascinating array of choices but you can always bet that among the dreams will be the desire to be a famous footballer, an astronaut and even a superhero or two! Of course, some of these dreams get more refined as they grow up and there will be lots of career advice given them by teachers and experts of all kinds, parents included.
There’s a well known saying that if you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plans. Sometimes, God may have very different designs in mind for us. Asking God what he wants us to do be alien to many. And even if we knew what God has in store for us, do we have the faith and courage, the trust and love to do it?!
Joseph is a man struggling with the the future. His plans have somehow been changed. Mary has already accepted Gods designs for her life and this has repercussions for John who is thinking his way out of and through a tricky situation. His nighttime sleep is disturbed by dreams as he wrestles with his predicament. And yet on waking, he has a clear vision of what God wants him to do, and he has the faith and trust in God to do it. He becomes guardian of God’s Son, providing a home where God’s Word can flourish in his life.
God our Father, help us to discover your design for our lives, and to have the faith and strength to accept it. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
