When stuck for words, the prayers of countless Christians before us can help express what we want and need to say to God in praise and prayer and thanksgiving. We hope these prayers may be of use to you as you journey deeper into prayer.
These well-prayed prayers are words which Christians have taken to heart over many years
Sign of the Cross
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all evermore. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen
Prayer of St Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
Act of Adoration (St Francis)
We adore You, Most Holy Lord, Jesus Christ, here and in all the churches of the whole world, and we bless You because by Your Cross You have redeemed the world. Have mercy on us.
Collect for purity
Heavenly Father, all hearts are open to you. No secrets are hidden from you. Purify us with the fire of your Holy Spirit that we may love and worship you faithfully, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O Sacrum Convivium
O sacred Banquet, wherein Christ is received; the memory of His Passion is renewed, the mind is filled with grace, and the pledge of future glory is given unto us. Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)
Prayer of St Richard of Chichester
Day by day, Lord, three things I pray: to see you more clearly, love you more dearly, follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.
For the departed
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.
Come, Holy Spirit
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, and you will renew the face of the earth.
O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of your faithful, grant that by that same Holy Spirit,
we may be truly wise, and ever rejoice in your consolation,
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Now, Lord, you have kept your word: let your servant go in peace. With my own eyes I have seen the salvation which you have prepared in the sight of every people: a light to reveal you to the nations and the glory of your people Israel. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Canticle of Simeon (Luke 2:29-32) is said or sung at Night Prayer.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Prayer is my response to God, with or without words. I adore, praise and thank him; I confess my sins and ask to be forgiven; I pray for others and myself; I listen to him and seek to know his will
